Rules for 5th Grade

Bergen Travel Basketball League Rules

Division: Fifth (5^th Grade)

BTBL will adhere to High School Basketball Rules with the following exceptions:

Basketball Size = 28.5” ball.

Time = 8 minute quarters; 3 minute Overtime; No running time

Roster Size = 15 Maximum

Playing Time = no mandated playing time

Foul line = Girls - May go over line except to gain rebounding advantage

Boys – May not go over the line.

Fouls – Regular = 5 and out

Technical = 2 and out

Fighting and/or use of profanity – see general rules

Bonus = HS Rules

Fouling out = upon 5^th individual foul including technical fouls

3 point shot = Yes, where applicable.

No defense allowed in backcourt. After second warning of defense in backcourt a technical foul may result if in the Refs discretion the backcourt defense was intentional.

Full court press = Boys - Final four (4) minutes of 4^th quarter and all overtime. Girls – Final three (3) minutes of 4^th Quarter and all overtime. Boys Army flight – pressing allowed during the entire 2^nd and 4^th quarters within the Mercy Rule limits.

Mercy Rule = no full court press by winning team if up by 10 points.

The team who is behind by the press limit +5 cannot press. The intent is to promote subs getting non pressured play time. It is viewed as unfortunate that some coaches who are losing by the press limit or more want their starters in at the end of the game to try to get back in the game against the winning teams subs.

Time Outs = 4 full one minute , no 30 second time outs

Overtime = 3 minutes; repeat as necessary. No Ties. Unused time outs will carry over + 1 per OT period.

3 seconds in foul lane = increased to 5 for girls

Coaches on Bench - Only one coach can stand. Only the head coach can call time out. Only the head coach can address the officials.

Playoffs = Top 4 teams.

REFEREES SHOULD REVIEW ALL RULES PRIOR TO GAME WITH BOTH TEAMS.
